Having
Fun during Pregnancy: Don’t Sacrifice, Replace!
Why is it that upon finding out they’re
pregnant, many women immediately begin to moan and complain
about what they
won’t be able to do for the next nine months? Sure, pregnancy comes with its
share of off-limits activities, but the sheer joy of becoming a mother and the
excitement of the process certainly outweighs any potential discomfort.
At times, some women are so focused on what
they can’t do that they forget to enjoy the great honor of bringing a new
little being into this world. And, while you can’t do things that are unhealthy
or could harm you and your new baby, you can still enjoy a range of old favorite activities.
You may even discover a new way of life you
appreciate even more. The following are just a few suggestions for feeling
great and replacing bad habits.
Drink
More
Of course we don’t mean alcohol, which is
strictly off-limits while you are expecting. Make sure to increase your intake
of hydrating liquids such as water, fruit juices and herbal teas. This will
help stave off a variety of pregnancy related complaints, including nausea and
morning sickness.
Do What
You Love
If you used to enjoy going out with your
friends, be sure to do the same during pregnancy. Remember that you can still
enjoy a great evening without any unhealthy habits! Buy a cute maternity
cocktail dress and organize a girls night out- you can drink lemonade even if
your friends are having wine!
You can still dance the night away as well-
just be sure to wear flat shoes and stay in well-ventilated areas with no
second hand smoke. You’ll also want to be sure to stay away from any packed
crowds where there’s a chance of falling or impact to your belly.
The idea is to continue to enjoy the things
that you like; the activities that define you and make you unique.
Keep
Exercising
Being pregnant is no excuse for ending your
healthy exercise habits- just be sure to amend your routine if necessary.
Consult with your healthcare practitioner to find out what’s best for your
needs. Contact sports and things like horseback riding are usually out, but you
can often continue jogging and doing aerobics.
Generally safe activities include walking,
swimming and ante-natal yoga.
Search
for Safe Alternatives
If you used to love your nightly glass of
wine or even (gasp!) smoking, look for healthy alternatives to your old
routines. Pamper yourself with a cup of hot chocolate in the evenings, or a
delicious tea for pregnancy.
If you are accustomed to stepping outside
for a smoke, leave those cigarettes in the past forever, and enjoy your time
outside admiring the view or taking a gentle stroll. By maintaining elements of
your old habits, you’ll create an easier transition on your mind and body.
If you find yourself down in the dumps
during maternity, try shopping for beautiful clothes to make you feel great- a maternity cocktail dress, pretty
maternity blouse or stylish jeans can do wonders for your psyche.
