The debate on
whether work is a ‘friend or foe’ has been the question on the lips of those who
lead busy working lives since the dawn of time. Whilst some of us struggle
through life working mind-numbing jobs that simply pay the rent, for the
majority of us, finding that perfect job role that suits our interests down to
a T is crucial if we are to enjoy a rich quality of life, right?
Although it’s
not easy starting out from scratch and working your way up the job ladder,
what’s comforting to know is that anything is possible… in life and in the work
space. It can be presumed that how we present ourselves and our desks at work
plays a huge part in who we are as people outside of work too - this is why
it’s important to organize our own personal desk in a way that will enable
maximum productivity whilst at the office. Just because we may sometimes have
to work those long hours and may feel like our only saviour is that strong
cappuccino at lunch, this shouldn’t mean that the desks have to suffer from
being drab and unloved… cue the art of change!
We’ve all heard
of giving our hair, wardrobe and homes a make-over, so why should our work
spaces be any different? Everybody is different in what they like and as a
result how we organize, or in some cases don’t organize our lives, often
reflects this. Every once in a while it can be a good thing to de-clutter that
pile of paperwork that’s been nesting all week, give the old computer keyboard
a dust and add some modern touches such as a vase of flowers or some scented
rocks which are both fragrant and decorative.
Whether you’re
the conservative type or a little more liberal, spicing up your desk can be the
start of great things to come in terms of positivity and turning work into a
place that you just can’t get enough of! It might be that you’re an estate
agent with a passion for interior design, in which case, why not give your
plain desk a lick of pastel coloured paint or introduce some quirky office
stationary items? Perhaps you’re a lawyer who just adores modern art - why not
visit your local gallery at the weekend and build up a little collection of art
prints? You could choose to hang some on the wall, or frame some post cards of
your favorite prints instead. Whatever interests you have outside of work, you
will definitely find that adding a little touch of ‘you’ will do wonders for
enhancing yours as well as your fellow co-workers’ moods when they enter your office space.
For those people
who spend a many hours working from home, it’s essential that you have some
sorted of designated working space so that you can refrain from distractions.
Even if you don’t have an entire room to free up, do keep in mind a place where
you know you won’t have any interruptions. It’s amazing what a spring clean,
some hard work and motivation can do to help transform your home into a fully
functional place to work peacefully.
Working long hours can sometimes mean having limited free time coupled
with high stress levels, which is why it’s imperative to have these decorative
things around us that we can be uplifted by. Scented candles, framed family
photos and regular desk organization are all without a doubt key things that
can contribute to a balanced and improved working life. So what are you waiting
for, make some changes today!
