3 Uplifting Reasons Why We Luv Comfort Foods

There always comes a time when we feel sad and low and, behold, we keep on munching something and it just felt good and right! That’s what comfort foods are. They make us feel better.  Comfort foods invoke a positive feeling the moment we take a bite of that yummylicious something that we so love. Whether it makes us recall of the best memories shared with loved ones, or remember an unforgettable event, or we just want to uplift our moods, these feel-good recipes definitely work out to satiating not only our palates, but also the deepest levels of our mind and spirit.

But why can’t we say no to comfort foods? There are a lot of reasons to explain them. Actually, there are numerous factors that affect the psychological, physiological and emotional aspects of our lives that trigger us to feel better when we eat a certain recipe. Here, we’ve enumerate the three most common reasons why a lot of us always resort to comfort food whenever we feel happy or sad. Read on and find out.

We recall something good in our past
We are what we eat, so they say. That is why the food that we love is directly linked to our emotions, which stem from our life experiences. Do you always recall Mom when eating that meaty spag? Or, did Pop give you a cheeseburger treat when you topped your tests way back in high school? Did granny bake your favorite cake for your birthday?  The foods that we really used to enjoy way back when we were younger usher in the feeling of that the good old days, when life was simpler and less stressful are here again. It’s like our means of escaping all the stress and pressure that our busy lives have to offer.

Comfort food lifts our emotions
The craving for comfort food heightens during winter time, do you notice that? Why? Because pressure mounts at this time of the year. There’s all the shopping and gift-giving spree that could strain your finances, as well as the host of parties, family gathering and reunions that you can’t say no to. All these cause our body’s supply of Vitamin D (which is responsible for bone growth) and serotonin (which is in charge of sleep and mood patterns) to significantly plummet. So, don’t ever wonder why you feel the post-holiday blues right after Christmas and New Year. Our body has its way of telling us it that doesn’t want us to get depressed. That’s why we tend to eat comfort food because we feel so sad and sorry for ourselves and all we ever wanted is to immediately gratify the cravings of our palate.

Comfort food makes us feel we deserve a break
After you’ve done something significant or after making it through some tough times in your life, you will definitely tell yourself I deserve a break! Whether you’ve been working out and dieting nonstop for a week, or you’ve just passed the exams, munching on your comfort food makes you feel that all the hardships and difficulties you’ve gone through are all worth it with a plate of a nice chocolate cake or a cup of frappe. After all, you deserve it, especially when you know you did a job well done!

While comfort foods are ideal mood-boosters, remember never to overeat or you’ll be in serious trouble! Just eat the right amount and once you’ve picked up on your emotions, you’re good to go already.
